What a statement needs to print.

The balance check needs an opening balance and a closing balance on the statement. Almost every bank and card statement prints both, under names like Beginning Balance, Previous Balance, Ending Balance, or New Balance. A statement that prints a running balance is checked row by row as well. A statement that prints neither balance is read, marked "Could not foot," and exported with that note.

Dates without a year are given the year of the statement period. Amounts printed as a minus, a trailing minus, parentheses, a separate column, or a section heading are read into one signed amount.

Exports

Five formats, each checked before download.

  • CSV

Every column: date, description, amount, balance, account, statement, page, category, check number, posted date, confidence. UTF-8, quoted fields, dates as YYYY-MM-DD, signed amounts with two decimals.

  • XLSX

The same columns on a Transactions sheet, with dates as dates and amounts as numbers. A Statements sheet with each statement's check, an Exceptions sheet, and a Flags sheet when any statement is flagged.

  • QuickBooks Online, 3-column

Date, Description, Amount. Dates as MM/DD/YYYY, money out negative, no currency symbols or thousands separators, no zero amounts. Descriptions without commas, quotes, or line breaks. At most 1,000 rows and 350 KB per file, one file per account. These are Intuit's published rules for the upload.

  • QuickBooks Online, 4-column

Date, Description, Credit, Debit. The same rules. Money out goes in the Credit column and money in goes in the Debit column, as Intuit's example shows. The other cell is left empty. A card file is imported into a credit card account.

  • Xero bank statement

Date, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference, Check Number, in Xero's US template. One signed amount and no balance column. A reference under 255 characters and a check number of digits only. At most 1,000 rows per file, one file per account.

QuickBooks Online and Xero are named to say which file each export produces. Ledgerfoot is independent and not affiliated with Intuit, QuickBooks, Xero, or any bank. Their names appear only to say which file format or which bank's statement is supported.
